Updating my ongoing woes with my A5:

Just got a call from the shop (not the dealership) and cyl #4 has about 25% compression. They swapped coils and injectors and the problem stayed there. At this point, there is either a broken ring (hopefully just that), a hole in the piston (not likely based on what the dealership said) or, "other". "Other" makes me nervous. If it is just the ring and there is no scoring on the liner, we are good to go. Drop the bottom out, remove the rod end cap, pop out the piston, replace ring, shove 'er back in. If that is all that is needed, I am looking at about $2500-ish or so. Not too bad.

No other codes thrown except shitty compression, so that's good. Hoping that this is just a minor mechanical issue. Too bad they have to pull the whole fucking engine to fix it. :/

Are you going to have it tuned again after the engine is fixed? I can't help but notice that all the people who have their WRX/STIs tuned end up with grenaded engines not long after.

An anecdote does not a data make, but still.

Any "might as wells" while they have the engine tore out?

Check your oil. Is it really really blackened?

AT LEAST a high flow CAT. I might get shot by my wife if I do anything else... lol

Well, I was thinking about it. I haven't heard of many ppl with just an APR stage 1 tune chernobyl-ing anything, really. More research, I must do.

Wasn't able to check that out. Those cars only come with "virtual" dipsticks. IE a screen that shows you oil level on a bar graph. It actually only has a dipstick tube that is there for techs to use.

Bummer.

Is it a turbo? Hole in a piston is pretty unlikely for an N/A, unless you were running SERIOUSLY lean.

I'd say the rings are a likely culprit.

I have a 05 legacy gt with 122k miles running 5lbs over stock boost with no issues whatsoever. same with a ton of other people with lgts and wrx's. anything under 20psi is pretty safe for the subaru EJ motors if the car has been tuned properly and gets regular oil changes.

My A5 is the 2.0T. I can't believe that a ring would just be all like, "hey go fuck yourself" outta no where. I drive stop n go traffic every day. Barely get a chance to really get on it that much.

A ring can just fail like any other component. Could also be a cracked head or leaking head gasket. Did you see white or blue smoke? Does it run poorly when cold? Did it overheat?

No smoke, no overheating always started right up and ran like a charm. Literally, straight out of no where when sitting in traffic, I went to creep forward and I felt a slight stuttering when accelerating. I thought nothing of it but then it just got worse and worse. Eventually it got so bad that anytime that I put the throttle down more than about 20% it bucked like a seizuring racehorse. It was also way down on power. Cylinder #4 is dead. What I think is that a small bit of the ring broke off and slid under the rest of it while I driving it. It just happened to occur when I was driving in traffic.

That's just it. I think the information I read is from tuning gone wrong, or general abuse.

Be happy it happened at/near idle. You don't want this to happen at high engine speeds. Well ... you don't want this to happen, period ... come to think of it.

Seems a bit much to take the engine out to replace rings. Modern cars i guess.

Any chance you have access to a boroscope? I've been meaning to pick up one of these amazon specials just for this use case; checking those nooks and tight spaces, inlets/outlets etc

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

wish you the best man! tune related or not, I've always been worried about motor issues w/the boxer from all the stories I've heard.

You can order a dipstick through Audi that goes in the dipstick tube. A lot of guys with Audis of this vintage do that as the virtual dipstick isn't trusted.

It's rare to break a ring and not break the piston. Also, I don't know that engine, but most engines are designed in a way that makes it impossible to remove the piston from the bottom.
